Presidential responsibility: Talking „chinese“ in the corona crisis

25 Octobre 2020 , Rédigé par Madeleine Staeheli Toualbia Publié dans #clip hébdomaire

Thank God - the presidential debate was a debate about tenors. As journalists normally try to understand unspoken messages, too, which is, in fact, part of their work and normally more complex than finding out the attributes of the relation between the candidates, the president, Mr. Donald Trump, and the former vice-président under the Obama administration, Mr. Joe Biden, it might be of importance to get a closer look at the words  of the president, Donald Trump.  When Joe Biden reproached the president with taking no responsibility in the corona crisis the president‘s answer was: „I take full responsibility. It‘s not my fault that it came here. It‘s China‘s fault. (...) They kept it from going to the rest of China for the most part but they didn‘t keep it from coming out to the world.“ Words should maybe be explained - if the president, Donald Trump, himself as a part of the government is talking „chinese“ (in the meaning of giving underlying or completely unclear information). Joe Biden was replying later on that the virus should be shut down not the nation (which is a fact Donald Trump does agree with in principle).

So who is the commander in chief if the president is maybe not allowed to be more clear and makes it understand in information of a such? And will it be the same - just in other words and more academically - if Joe Biden wins the election? And would it not be of high importance to inform about a danger that is not under control - if there is one? Should doctors speak out? If yes, what are they waiting for? Attacking leaders because they are backing out cannot be a positive approach in the long term.
