Stabilizing conflict

9 Juin 2022 , Rédigé par Madeleine Staeheli Toualbia Publié dans #clip hébdomaire

The possibility of a civil war can not only be a reason for a political balance but is a form of an extreme dissense that must be accepted, as the italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben is outlining in his short essay „Stato di eccezione e guerra civile“ („state of exception and civil war“), part of the Quodlibet exercices. A political system that is not accepting civil war as the most extreme form of a dissense will drift away to totalitarism, e.g. happening when individual rights and politics are becoming forms of government. Where are we, therefore, with the questions about the war in Ukraine and its possible membership in the European Union? Giorgio Agamben is saying that governments have been dividing people in two groups in opposition towards each other with the result of a conflict that is stabilizing. Do we, therefore, accept the war in Ukraine? Yes, we do.
